DeSilva Island EdgeWater House

Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright, Edgwater was envisioned to provide a relaxed lifestyle close to nature. Its broad, low roof lines meld the horizontal exterior with the shoreline. Exposed stone columns can be found in pairs at each access point to the outdoors, rising vertically with the surrounding trees. Stained glass motifs of the the home have been designed into the windows, doors and rotunda ceiling, allowing the site's rich natural light to splash color throughout the residence.

Edgewater exists as its name suggests, perched on the edge of the San Francisco Bay. Designed by Paul Gilger of Hedgepeth Architects, the home is a dramatic response to a rare natural setting and most sought-after view. Stone piers support the living room over the water - and the feeding herons and egrets below. A modern floor plan of fluid open space revolves around a boldly curved staircase and skylight rotunda. When added to the pristine surrounding, such details project a sense of comfort and serenity. The effect is an understated elegance in a protected location that cannot be replicated.

THE FIRST FLOOR - A cutting-edge family kitchen provides the latest in culinary technology and is appointed with Downsview pearwood cabinetry, granite counters and sleek stainless steel. French doors open to a spacious limestone terrace with a barbecue area, perfect for al fresco dining and entertaining. Inside, built-in shoji screens add elegance to the open dining area and foyer. Dashing light pours through rhythmic windows and skylights above.

A media room is wired for an advanced home theater. Its tall French doors lead to a Japanese water garden with spa. The DeSilva Island nature preserve is just beyond. The sunken living room radiates warmth and is framed by a stone fireplace, expansive ceiling and high windows. Towering French doors open to a one-of-a-kind vantage point -- a cantilevered deck 27 feet above water with astounding views of San Francisco and the Bay. From here, it is difficult to imagine a more stunning location.

THE SECOND FLOOR - Light from the rotunda illuminates the curved walls of the second floor gallery, which is suitable for fine art. The master suite and balcony command panoramic views of the San Francisco, the Bay and Marin landscape.

Within, there is a gas fireplace, walk-in closet, dressing alcove and work space. The master bath is a luxurious retreat with spa details, such as a separate shower room with massage jets, a sauna and an infinite-edge soaking tub.
